Johnny Marr rocked Holmfirth last Thursday and this is his new single which he played there. Before that, can it really be 22 years since Songs Of Faith And Devotion? Apparently so.
Drakkar Band - Bang Chhub Thveu Khos Hoeuy
No I won't try pronouncing the track title. And Google's Khmer to English translator isn't giving me anything. Anyway... The Drakkar Band were quite the thing in the early 1970s, fusing Western influences with the best of Khmer music to create something pretty special. Drakkar 74 was launched as a run of 20,000 cassettes which went quickly, prompting two further runs of 20,000 more. 1975 turned Cambodia upside down and part of the Khmer Rouge's cultural vandalism - though perhaps not their worst crime - accounted for most of those. Some remained, however, and a four-year project by Metal Postcards records saw it remastered from whatever they could find. It is an absolute wonder. The 12" was a run of 500 only, but you can get it as a digital release. I recommend that you do.

Lux Lisbon - Keep Me Wild
This four-piece met at Nottingham Uni and are now based out of that London. They sound a bit like the Killers, but if the Killers had ever followed an idea through to completion. There's some intelligent writing, musically and lyrically on the EP Get Some Scars which you can get as a free download now.
Kassassin Street - To Be Young
I don't know a lot about these other than they're from Portsmouth and named for a Portsmouth street. Oh, and that I like this a lot.

Another track from the local five-piece's self-titled EP which is out now. Probably my favourite from it.
One Degree of Separation Komputer - Valentina Public Service Broadcasting - Valentina
Two different tellings of the tale of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space. A bit more literal from Komputer, off their 1997 album The World Of Tomorrow, and certainly more obviously Kraftwerk-influenced. PSB's new album is The Race For Space and it's a wonder. Fascinating period of modern history.
Bona Dish - Challenge
Maybe I should start a lost 45 section. This dates from the early '80s and can be found on a compilation called the Zaragoza Tapes: 1981-1982. They were from Hertfordshire and this track is probably still relevant now.
Motorama - Dispersed Energy
This could be Joy Division if you close your eyes tightly enough. But it's not post-industrial Manchester, it's modern-day Rostov-on-Don. Poverty is the new album which came out in January.
Leftfield - Universal Everything
New! And fantastic! Leftfield is a solo project these days, Neil Barnes going it alone without Paul Daley. A new album, Alternative Light Source, is due for release in June.

Girl One and The Grease Guns - Bashed, Beaten and Broken (Trip The Switch)
One band clinging to the old practice of having stupid names, a lot harder to do in the information age than last time it was popular. Sissy Space Echo, Warren Betamax, Bruce Leefax and Charles Bronson Burner. Good effort. This is out on Squirrel Records.
Cheatahs - Controller
Lovely stuff as Cheatahs follow up their well-received debut album with an EP called Sunne.
Cover Version Corner Pulp/Bonar Faerground - Babies
It's probably a right of passage for Sheffield bands to do a Pulp cover. The lead singer of Faerground Accidents - of which more later - is a flamboyant chap and the stripped-back nature of this track really shows his voice off. Before that, from 1994's His n Hers. Wonderful.
Colleen Green - Pay Attention
Throwing forward to February now and Ms Green's new album I Want To Grow Up. There is nothing about this I do not like.

A double link with the parentheses obvious and the involvement of Johnny Marr less so. That The The record easily as relevant today as it was in 1989.
Fumaça Preta - Vou Me Libertar
This has got the lot, including some Mark E Smith-esque keyboard noodling. A collective of UK, US and Venezuelan musicians, this is out now as a 7". I'm Gonna Be Free, before you ask.
Wand - Clearer
Retro, but entirely in vogue a la Toy, Temple Songs and suchlike. On an album called Ganglion Reef which is out now.
HVOB - Window
To Vienna to finish and this wonderful slice of trance. Her Voice Over Boys. The title track of their new EP which is out on the 28th.

Public Service Broadcasting - Elfstedentocht part 1 John: New stuff from these, made for the 'Explore The North' festival in Friesland, in the northern Netherlands. Elfstedentocht means 'eleven cities tour' and is a 200km ice-skating race which tours the eleven cities of Friesland, starting and ending at Leeuwarden. It takes place a maximum of once a year and only when the entire course of rivers and canals has an ice covering of 15cm and was last held in 1997. Carolyn: Very familiar to fans of the band, which we are. John: We'll play part two later, something a bit different.

Carolyn: Yes, it's quite clever lyrically, which I always appreciate. I'm more into words than you with your bleeps and breaks.
Femme - Fever Boy John: I think you liked that too. Carolyn: It's got an 'eh-oh' bit as well. If you're singing along before you've finished hearing it for the first time, it must be doing something right. John: It bounces along nicely. Femme is Laura Bettinson who has done a bunch of other stuff - Ultraista for one - and that's out next Monday, the 18th.
Fold - Salvation John: New to me these, they were introduced as 'if you like PSB, you'll like these'. Well I do. And I do. They're from Leeds and they've an EP out imminently.
Poppy Ackroyd - Seven John: That's just lovely. Really cinematic. Carolyn: When you said it was called Seven, I wondered if it was like Severn rather than the number as it has a flow to it, like a running river. Beautiful.
Warm Brains - Happy Accidents John: New on Art Is Hard records, Warm Brains are Rory Attwell's latest thing. The EP 'Happy Accidents' is out now on cassette and comes with a football-style scarf. Carolyn: Cassette only? Why? John: A few labels are doing this. It's a resurgence in the medium, like vinyl only less so. Carolyn: I wish I'd not thrown your old Walkman away now. John: Err... I kept it.
One Degree of Separation The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising John: Creedence Clearwater Revival from the 1969 album 'Green River' and before that, Hendrix from 1967's 'Are You Experienced'. Do you want to tell them the link? Carolyn: Mondegreens. Misheard lyrics. The Hendrix track is probably the most famous example - 'scuse me while I kiss the sky/this guy' - and apparently a common mishearing with Bad Moon Rising is 'there's a bathroom on the right'. John: We turned down a few others. The Bee Gees with 'Bald Headed Woman', Moody Blues with 'Nights In Prestatyn'... Carolyn: ...and Robert Palmer. "You're gonna have to face it you're a dick in a glove".
Public Service Broadcasting - Elfstedentocht part 2 John: And, as promised, part two of the new PSB track. My worry with them was that it would get tired quickly, but so far, it looks like there's legs in what they're doing. Long may it continue, because I think it's a neat idea executed brilliantly.
The Egg - Woodstock '69 John: And we'll end with this. We played 'In Your Pocket' a while ago which is a great track, but I'd not really given the rest of the album much heed until recently. It's all good. 'Something To Do' is the album which came out last year. It's great.

The new single from these off the acclaimed album 'Inform - Educate - Entertain' which if you haven't got yet, you really should sort out. Timely stuff, too. 'Letters for the rich, letters for the poor' goes the line in the poem WH Auden wrote for the film that's used here, also called Night Mail. Don't get too used to that if the sell-off happens.
We went to see these at Holmfirth a couple of weeks back. Brilliant. Again.
Suicide Dolphin Bombers - Made In China
This is a couple of years old, but I only heard it for the first time last week. Owen Morris, producer of Oasis's early albums among much else, is behind them.
Zero 7 - On My Own
A London two-piece with Danny Pratt guesting on vocals. That single was out in August and is just lovely.
Cover Version Corner Joy Division/Therapy? - Isolation
I can't believe that's the first Joy Division record we've played. That is quite a bleak song, and yet Therapy? somehow manage to convey that bleakness slightly better than Joy Division. The original is from 1980 and was on the album 'Closer'. Therapy?'s was off 1994's 'Troublegum'.
Eccentronic Research Council - Maxine's Dream
We have the word curious in the show title and we promise you curios. After the album '1612 Overture', Sheffield's ERC are back working with Maxine Peake and the first thing we've heard off the forthcoming long-player is this tribute to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and the work of Delia Derbyshire. Magnificent.
Mazes - Hayfever Wristband
That reminds me of about half a dozen different things, none of which I can immediately bring to mind. The album 'Better Ghosts' is coming soon and should be worth seeking out if this is a decent indicator of what's on it.
Moodoïd - Je Suis La Montagne
Right out of the Air sort of envelope, it shouldn't surprise you that these are Parisian. The EP, also called 'Moodoïd', came out on the 9th of this month. Mind the umlaut if you're looking for it.
Eagulls - Nerve Endings
A bit closer to home now - these are from Leeds and this is brand, spanking new. It's off an EP also called 'Nerve Endings' which comes out next Monday, the 30th of September. Loud, brash, great.
One Degree of Separation Talking Heads - Right Start David Byrne - Dance On Vaseline
Not a huge leap here. In fact, I won't even patronise you by going over it. The first of those two doesn't get a lot of air-time. It's off 1980's 'Remain In Light' album. The second is one of those that will always remain in my top so-many records of all time. It's off the album 'Feelings' which came out in 1997. It feels so much older than that, probably because I'm so familiar with it. Again, I can't believe we've not had either of these before given my affection for Talking Heads and the work of David Byrne more generally. What have I been playing at?
Council Tax Band - The Bigger The Budget
A band I came across thanks to the power of Twitter and finally there's a track I can play on a family show. They're from Bedford and bill themselves as 'two guitars, synth, drums and shouting'. Fine by me. Also, if there's a better name for a band than that - other than perhaps 'Fern Britton's Gastric Band' which, to the best of my knowledge, doesn't actually exist - I don't want to know about it.
Incubus - Aqueous Transmission
We'll end with a track to throw forward to the show that follows, Down Tempo with Phil Brook. These are from California and it comes off the 2001 album 'Morning View'. Soothing.

Kraftwerk - Radioaktivität John: The original of this was out in 1975, off the album also called 'Radioaktivität', but this version is from 1991's 'The Mix', an album of remixes of their bigger hits. It started as an homage to the discovery and power of nuclear energy, but as time went on became more and more anti-nuke. I'll put both on the playlist for comparison's sake. I think I prefer them in German. Carolyn: More authentic maybe? John: Perhaps. Just a bit more exotic. We play that as our cat died last week and it was her favourite song. Carolyn: Well, she liked the flashing lights. John: Basically the same thing. Either way, she was transfixed by it and we both miss her.

Public Service Broadcasting - Inform Educate Entertain John: Finally, the album came out last week and we've got our hands on it. This is the title track and is a bit of a sampler for the rest of the album, so if you like this, you're quids in. Carolyn: We do, and we're off to see them at the Leadmill next week.
Cover Version Corner The Cure/Art Brut - Catch John: I think the Art Brut version is where Eddie Falco finally just gave up pretending to have some singing ability, but they're about so much more than that. We play that as there's a new greatest hits album out - 'Art Brut Top Of The Pops' - which this features on. It first appeared on an NME album of Cure covers, 'Pictures Of You', in 2009. The original was on 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me' from 1987.
Musa Okwonga - Heavyweight John: Some spoken word from poet/sports writer/journalist/author/broadcaster/polymath Musa Okwonga, subtitled 'A Love Letter To London'. I think a lot of that applies to the rest of Britain as well. Carolyn: Yes, possibly. And it's not a town. It's a city. A mega-city.
The Fall - Sir William Wray John: Out today, the 30th studio album by The Fall. It's called 'Re-Mit' and this is the first single off it which came out at the back end of last month for record store day. As noisy and belligerent as ever.
Razmataz Lorry Excitement - China Town (Razmataz Lorry Excitement remix) John: To Newcastle now and also out today, this is off an EP of remixes of China Town. The original came out in December last year on the album 'If It Takes Me All Night'. Carolyn: Sounds very '90s. I can see me dancing to this in the Plaza. John: Not that there's anything wrong with that.
One Degree of Separation Aphex Twin - Analogue Bubblebath 1 Cocteau Twins - Pearly Dewdrops' Drop John: The Cocteaus from Grangemouth, that's from 1984. Aphex Twin is Richard James from Limerick and that's off the 'Didgeridoo' EP from 1992. Carolyn: The link being twins then? John: Yes, but not quite. They're all called twins without being twins. There's four of them in the Cocteaus, for starters. Carolyn: And they're not related.
Keel Her - Riot Grrrl John: How many people are playing on that record, d'you reckon? Carolyn: One. John: Dammit. That's Rose Keeler-Shaeffeler from Brighton.

Cover Version Corner Rolling Stones/Devo - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction John: Devo, very much of the burgeoning MTV scene, had a very visual element to their work. That's from the 1977 EP 'Be Stiff'. The Stones, of course, need no introduction. Vitalic - Fade Away John: Vitalic is Frenchman Pascal Arbez. That's off the album 'Rave Age' which came out last December. It sounds like a number of things, none of which I can place.
Tomorrow's World - Drive John: Keeping it French, this is Jean-Benoit Dunkel - him out of Air - and Lou Hayter. We've played them before, but this is the second track from the album 'Tomorrow's World' which is out today. And yes they are named after the TV show.
Spectrals - Milky Way John: Someone else we've had before, this is Louis Smith from Heckmondwike, now firmly part of the Leeds scene. It's off the forthcoming long-player 'Sob Story' and is very jaunty indeed. Carolyn: Always good to play local stuff. We do a lot from all over the world, which is great, but also good not to forget those closer to home.
One Degree Of Separation Boards Of Canada - roygbiv Public Service Broadcasting - roygbiv John: We've been championing PSB like few others. 'Inform, Educate, Entertain' is out next month and I can't wait to get hold of it. Carolyn: We like them. John: Before that, a track we have played before, a 1998 10" single which I adore. Menace Beach - Drop Outs John: Back to Leeds now for some lo-fi goodness. It's out on a limited release on Rough Trade records.
Tricky - Nothing's Changed John: New from the Bristol trip-hop veteran, from the forthcoming album 'False Idols' which is out next month. You can grab this as a free download from his website.
Serafina Steer - Disco Compilation John: Not enough harp on this show. This is off the album 'The Moths Are Real' which is out about now, I think. Carolyn: A bit bass-heavy isn't it? John: No such thing as too much bass.

British Sea Power - Machineries Of Joy John: New from these, from the forthcoming album also called 'Machineries Of Joy' which is out on April 1 and I really like that.
B>E>A>K - Night Owls John: A Sunderland supergroup, that's a paean to a popular nightspot in the town. Carolyn: Are there enough bands to form a supergroup? John: There are members of Field Music, Futureheads, Lake Poets, Lorry... That's available as a free download from their bandcamp page.
Cover Version Corner Lykke Li/Triggerfinger - I Follow Rivers John: A pan-European cover version corner. Triggerfinger are from Antwerp and that was a non-album single that then cropped up on a 'B-sides/various' compilation last year. It's a bit of a cheat on the first one as it's the Magician Mix of Lykke Li's 2011 single off the album 'Wounded Rhymes'.
High Hazels - French Rue John: I've been after this for a while. From Sheffield, which might be why I'm drawing parallels with Richard Hawley. Carolyn: Yeah, it's got a bit of a Sheffield sound.
Public Service Broadcasting - Signal 30 John: Favourites of ours, this is off the forthcoming album 'Educate, Entertain' which I am very much looking forward to. Carolyn: Yes, very much like these. I think it only works with American and received pronunciation in a 1950s style. I don't think a modern public information film would work. John: And perhaps Chris Huhne could have done to listen to the original films about 10 years ago.
The Besnard Lakes - People Of The Sticks John: From Montreal, the driving force behind these is husband and wife Jake Lasek and Olga Goreas. That's off the album 'Until In Excess, Imperceptible UFO' which is out on the 2nd of April. Carolyn: There's something about that I didn't like. Something underneath that made me think about swimming underwater.
One Degree of Separation Art Brut - St Pauli The Fall - Theme From Sparta FC #2 John: 26 shows and this is the first time we've played The Fall. That's slacking. That came out in 2004, off the album 'The Real New Fall LP, Formerly Country On The Click'. Art Brut are one of those bands that cling to silly names - Eddie Argos, Freddie Feedback and suchlike - and that was off their second album 'It's A Bit Complicated' from 2007. Carolyn: And the link? John: European football clubs. St Pauli are from Hamburg while Sparta FC... Well it could be Rotterdam or Prague, I suppose. Carolyn: It's a bit tenuous. You just wanted to play those records, didn't you? John: I wanted to play Art Brut, then went looking for a link elsewhere and, like I say, it's high time we played The Fall.
Toy - My Heart Skips A Beat John: Another band we've played a few times. That's the new single from the debut album 'Toy' which really is something. Such a variety on there, from poppy tracks like Lose My Way, through this which is just damned pleasant to the 10-minute epic that is Kopter. It really is very good indeed. Carolyn: Yes, we like those a lot. That's just a lovely track.
Haight Ashbury - Blow Your Mind John: Another one I've been after for a while. These are from Glasgow, but named after the area of San Francisco, and it's off the album 'Perhaps?', their third, which is out in May. Psych-folk, I think they call it. Carolyn: Oh, that's a genre is it? I'd have filed it under 'nice'. John: Well, it's got folk elements and a bit of a '60s/'70s San Francisco hippy vibe, hasn't it?
Lapalux - Guuurl John: Lapalux is Stuart Howard from Essex and that's 'Guuurl', with three Us. Carolyn: Another daft spelling... I don't particularly like that, the distortion effects. John: That's what sets it apart for me. You'll like the album title, I think: 'Nostalchic'. Carolyn: Yeah, alright. I'll let him off.
Mogwai - Modern John: To finish, the new one from Glasgow favourites Mogwai. From the forthcoming album 'Les Revenants' which, as you don't need me to tell you, is French for ghosts. Carolyn: I was just about to... John: Nothing too much new there. The usual cinematic qualities, which is no bad thing.
The Black Keys - Tighten Up John: We've had these a couple of times before. This is another from their smash hit album 'El Camino' which came out in 2011. I could just play the whole album one week and not have to plan anything.
Public Service Broadcasting - New Dimensions In Sound John: We've had these before too. Carolyn: I like that one a lot. Their stuff is really interesting. John: We're due an album soon too. 'Educate, Entertain'. Very Reithian.
Cayucas - High School Lover John: Cayucas being Zach Yudin from Santa Monica and that's off the forthcoming album 'Bigfoot' which comes out in April.
Cover Version Corner Wedding Present/Toquiwa - Kennedy John: From the 1988 album 'Bizarro', that's one of my favourite Wedding Present records. Toquiwa are an all-girl 3-piece from Tokyo who have toured with the Wedding Present and are on the same record label. Carolyn: That's nice and cosy.
My Bloody Valentine - New You John: Back after 22 years, a new album, 'm b v', came out last week. I found a lot of it not to my taste, but that one I like. Carolyn: You can't go wrong with a few doo-doo-doos. What were they up to for 22 years anyway? John: I don't know, but it makes the 7 years for the Stone Roses' 'Second Coming' look positively prompt.
The Knife - Full Of Fire John: Now I'm expecting this to divide opinion. It's over 9 minutes long and pretty experimental. It's by brother and sister team The Knife who are Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson. Carolyn: I liked bits. Some other bits didn't work and it was probably too long, but you had warned me and I'm not totally against it. John: Well that's something. I think it's quite astonishing. Off the album 'Shaking The Habitual'. Carolyn: We'll no doubt have something less challenging next. John: ...
Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät - Mä Vihaan Maailma John: Finnish punk from Pertti Kurikan and his band formed in 2008. The four of them all have some sort of learning disability and work in a not-for-profit music workshop for the disabled. Mä Vihaan Maailma means 'I Hate The World'.
Woodkid - Iron John: That's something isn't it? Yoann Lemoine is Woodkid, better known for his music videos. This originally appeared on an EP in 2011 and also features on the album 'The Golden Age' which comes out next month.

John: Well that is what we're trying to do here. The Slits, their debut single from 1979 from the album Cut and, of course, Marvin Gaye from 1969 off the album of the same name.
Two Door Cinema Club - Sun John: The new single from these, out on the 23rd of this month. Carolyn: Another one we've had before. It's good, that.
Elbow - Whisper Grass John: From the new album Dead In The Boot, designed (it says here) to be listened to as an album. Carolyn: Rather than piecemeal, as is the modern way with downloading individual tracks.
Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone Is Not Enough John: With Nina Persson from The Cardigans on guest vocals. From the 2007 album Send Away The Tigers, but we play that because it's 20 years since their debut with Generation Terrorists. Carolyn: I feel old. John: There's loads of things like that. It's 20 years since Reservoir Dogs, for instance. Carolyn: I think when it's 20 years since Pulp Fiction, I'll really feel old as it's the first film we went to see together.
Lianne La Havas - Forget John: From her debut album Is Your Love Big Enough? which, scandalously, didn't win the Mercury Prize. Neither did our favourite, Django Django, or the sentimental option of Richard Hawley. Instead, it was the one album on the list I didn't like. Carolyn: You were not happy about that. But, Alt-J, Leeds University, bit of a local connection? John: I just don't like it. I realise I might be in a minority, but that's what makes the world go round.
One Degree Of Separation Wedding Present - Don't Take Me Home Until I'm Drunk The Ukrainians - Cherez Richku, Cherez Hai Carolyn: Well I wasn't expecting that. Normally, the two records in this section are quite similar... Go on then, what is it? John: Two Leeds bands. First, the Wedding Present, from their seventh album El Rey out in 2008. That was followed by The Ukrainians, a modernised Ukrainian folk band formed by Weddoes guitarist Peter Solowka as he tried to get in touch with his Ukrainian roots. The title means 'across the river, through the wood' and is from the album also called The Ukrainians.
El Perro Del Mar - Hold Off The Dawn John: Back to Scandinavian singers here. El Perro del Mar - Sea Dog, I suppose - the name under which Sarah Assbring performs. She's from Gothenburg which is... Carolyn: ...somewhere I've been. Lovely city. The people are really friendly.
Motorama - To The South John: To Russia now. It's a cosmopolitan show tonight. These are from Rostov-on-Don and that's all I've got on these.

They're all back together now though, riding the wave of reunions
