Unceremoniously bumped for pre-season football last week, this week's show is what I'd have played last week had Town not had Premier League opposition. Remember last week? Town even had a manager back then. Halcyon days, those... Anyway, back to it.

The Horrors - In And Out Of Sight
Great opener to any show. Off their album Luminous which came out in May, that's the latest single. They're a band I feel I probably ought not to like, but every now and then they put out something really good like this. It's almost infuriating.

Heavyball - Another Country
Love these to bits. This is their latest. When we getting an LP, fellers?

Honeyblood - Super Rat
Off the album Honeyblood, that's glorious. They're a two-piece from Glasgow.

Marvin Gaye/Gil Scott Heron - Inner City Blues
Released ten years apart, but no less relevant in 1981 when Gil Scott Heron recorded it as it was in 1971. Suppose it's no less relevant now as well, another 33 years on.

Kindred Shins - The Smoker Never Quits
From last year's Yes To Rioting Notoriety, that's some splendid bluesy rock.

Naomi Punk - Television Man
Looking way into the future now. The album this is off, also called Television Man, isn't out until October. Wishing my life away...

Even As We Speak - Falling Down The Stairs
Going back a bit with this one, to 1993. From Sydney, this came out on an LP called Feral Pop Frenzy.

Kult Country - Trembling Moon
These are from Manchester. I missed this when it came out in June. Happy to have it on my radar now.

Owl John - Red Hand
Based in Mull and LA it says here, which I suppose is nice work if you can get it. Really like that though. Not sure what it reminds me of.

Pow! - 66
I know pretty much nothing about these, just that that's off an album called Hi-Tech Boom which came out in July and that I like it.

Bedlam - Harvest Moon
Harry Nilsson - Coconut
Supreme silliness from Harry Nilsson, off the 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson. Before that, Cozy Powell and Bedlam from their self-titled 1973 long player. The link? Reservoir Dogs.

Teleman - Skeleton Dance
This is the latest release from the critically-acclaimed album Breakfast, which is ace. A complete joy.

Grimes ft. Blood Diamond - Go
A bit more commercial than her previous stuff, moreso than what got me interested in the first place anyway, but not completely terrible.

Eat Lights, Become Lights - Velocet Vir Nesat
Still not sure if that's a decent name for a band or not. Still, pretty decent stuff. From the album Into Forever which came out in May.

Junior Murvin - Apartheid
Not that I'm conflating the global importance of the two men, but I play this in marking two sad deaths in the week. Most of Junior Murvin's back-catalogue has been overlooked after his death just over a week ago, purely to reduce his output to Police And Thieves. That's unfair as there was much more to the man that that. And obviously, it's about a racially divided South Africa.

The Flaming Lips - Peace Sword
Written for the film Enders Game which came out in October. In fact, they wrote a whole EP for it, but this was the only one that was picked up. Everyone's a critic...

The Shall I Say Quois ft CTMF - It's Hard To Be Happy
What a joy this is. Their debut EP is 'Shall I Say Quoi?' and is out now. CTMF are Wild Billy Chyldish's band from which more in future shows.

Julian Cope/Death Cab For Cutie - World Shut Your Mouth
Not hugely different versions, but Death Cab have put their own stamp on it. Moreover, it's good to see someone as influenced by Julian Cope as I am. It was a non-album single from 2007 for Death Cab. The original is off 'Saint Julian' from 1987.

Courtney Barnett - History Eraser
I like it when people sing in their own accent. Ms Barnett is from Melbourne, Australia, and that's off an EP called 'How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose'. Of course. Also, bonus points for the mellotron.

Nimi Dovrat - For Fun
Our first Israeli artist, this came out in May and is available as a free download. It reminds me of something. What, though?

The Wharves - Thick Syrup
An all-female 3-piece from London, this is new on a split single on Soft Power records and is out now.

Motorama - Winter At Night
To Russia now. These are from Rostov-on-Don and it's their new single.

Rod Stewart - Maggie May
David Rotheray - Maggie's Song
It's only when you listen to these back-to-back that you realise just how nasty the lyrics to Maggie May actually are. I mean, I like the song, but the sentiments within are really quite horrible. Maggie's Song is off David Rotheray's, ex of the Beautiful South, new album 'Answer Ballads'. It's a really good idea pulled off with great style, 'answering' famous records like Roxanne, Jolene, Sylvia's Mother. Maggie's Song is a big two fingers up to Rod.

Likely Lads - Irreverence
A new band to me, from my home town of York. Nice, jaunty stuff. I fear they'll forever be likened to Shed 7 and I'm not convinced that's a good thing.

Pixies - Another Toe In The Ocean
Brilliant. Another track off 'EP1'. They've lost another bassist called Kim since then as well. Careless.

Solomon Grey - Firechild
Wonderful. Solomon Grey isn't a person, this a duo and this came out on the 18th of last month.

The Orielles - Truth Be Told
These are from Halifax and used to be called The Oreohs. I'm guessing that H didn't save them from the copyright police... Anyway, jolly pleasant stuff and I'll be keeping an eye out from them in future.

Grimes - Circumambient 
And we finish with another track from last year's smash album 'Visions' from Claire Boucher, aka Grimes. I don't care what anyone says, I like her stuff. And it throws forward nicely to Phil Brook's Down Tempo show that follows us.

Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons - The Night
John: Reached number seven in 1975, but it's got a real contemporary feel to it. Mark Ronson's doing this, basically.
Carolyn: It's certainly stood the test of time.

The Vaccines - I Always Knew
Carolyn: That's two for two off that album now. Teenage Icon is catchy and so is this.
John: That's the new single and it's out on November 11.

Little Comets - A Little Opus
John: From Newcastle and the album, Life Is Elsewhere, was out last week.

John: Record Club is a project Beck has put together where they cover a whole album in a day and this is off their first one. Also, Velvet Underground and Nico is re-released after a coat of varnish this week for it's 35th anniversary.

Django Django - Life's A Beach
John: The fourth or fifth record from the album we've played on the show. It's terrific.
Carolyn: It has a real '60s vibe.

The Go! Team - Buy Nothing Day
John: As peppy a pop record as you could wish for.

No Ceremony - feelsolow
John: I don't know anything about these, because there's nothing to know.

The Kingstonians - Sufferer
John: Skanking round the studio to that one. We don't play enough ska.
Carolyn: Well you pick the records!
John: Originally out in 1970, that's on a Trojan Records compilation called Boss Reggae

John: Less of a country feel to that than some of their others.

John: Your link here is Mike Skinner, formerly recording as The Streets and that was his second single from way back in 2002. His new project with Rob Harvey, formerly of The Music, is The d.o.t. and their debut album, And That, is out today.
