A new EP from les freres Loveless. Autonomy is out soon.

The latest single from the frankly brilliant album Miniature World.

From Washington DC and off their self-titled EP.

Yes, he of The Damned with his first solo album. PHD (Prison, Hospital, Debt) came out in May.

Loobs - Dandelion
From Melbourne, this is off Bubblewrap.

Teleman - Song For A Seagull
Another track from the forthcoming Family Of Aliens which sounds like it's going to be a belter.

Two of my favourite bands around at the moment combining on a new single.

Newport's Jamie Howells is ESP and this is off the album Meet The Planets.

The solo album from half of Factory Floor is called Physical and came out last Friday.

16 July 2018

Here we go again.

Walter Lure & The The Waldos - Crazy Kids
The last surviving member of The Heartbreakers, Lure and The Waldos have a new LP out, this being the title track.

Sarandon - Mustn't Grumble
Sarandon's Age Of Reason LP, released in 2011, is quite the thing. Packed with really short tracks and then this 5-minuter.

UkePunk - Life And The World
Sex, Pies & Austerity is the forthcoming album from our favourite Ramsbottom-based ukulele punk act.

BEAK> - Brean Down
New stuff from Geoff Barrow and his BEAK> project. Their third LP is titled >>> and who knows how that's pronounced. 'Greater than, greater than, greater than'?

Okay Champ - William Tell
From Newcastle, there's quite the buzz about these. Easy to see why.

Vukovar - Dead Pressed Flowers
Makers of two of my favourite albums of last year, here's one from the new one Infinitum.

Linda Em - Wild Fire
The first of three tracks with a very country vibe. In fact, why don't I play them all back-to-back?
First, London-based Irish singer Linda Em with a track from the EP London Irish which is out in autumn.

Jessica's Brother - Humdinger
Also from London, though featuring Jonny Huddersfield Helm on drums, come Jessica's Brother with a track from the self-titled debut.

Milk Kan - Brixton Hill Revisited
Also from London, south London, come Milk Kan and what they're calling 'drill country'. The EP The Glitch Country is available now.

Therapy? - Callow
And now for something completely different. A new track from the veteran rockers addressing the new age of anxiety taken from the forthcoming LP Cleave.

The Salient Braves - Slob
Barnsley's premier pop act with a new track, available from today.

BOO - Bella
That's the Battery Operated Orchestra to you. New single, out now.

Teleman - Cactus (Boxed In remix)
A terrific track in it's own right - that I played a few weeks back - now mixed up by Boxed In - another band I have a lot of time for - in a terrific stylee.

The Senior Service - The Contender
Off the second album King Cobra - out now on Damaged Goods - this is quite brilliantly uncategorisable.

Afghan Sand Gang - Mantra
As is this, to the ends that they themselves have coined the term 'kraut dance'. They're from Mossley and the EP Machine Music is both out now and highly recommended.

Monday, 18 June 2018

18 June 2018

Let's face it, nobody was listening what with England kicking off at the same time.

Teleman - Cactus
A third album is coming in September, Family Of Aliens, which the band say is the result of a freer and more collaborative writing method. It does show in a way and this band go from strength to strength as a result.

Dave Dark & The Sharks - Spacetime Tours Inc
Welsh electronica, from Newport no less, and a new single.

L/F/D/M - Turning To Lime
A track from the album Death: An Introduction which came out in March.

The Body - Nothing Stirs
Terrific stuff from Portland, Oregon. The album is I Have Fought Against It, But I Can't Any Longer which came out last month.

Perpacity - Telethon
Ian Harling and Martin Nyrup make up Perpacity despite being based in the UK and Denmark respectively. This is the second track from the forthcoming LP The Order Of Now, out in September.

Astral Skulls - Take It Away
From Melbourne, this is the flip side to the April single This Place.

Mourn - Barcelona City Tour
From Barcelona, this is off Sorpresa Familia which came out last Friday.

Flasher - Pressure
A trio from Washington DC with this taken from the LP Constant Image.

Mishka Shubaly - Animals
A terrific new LP from the New Yorker, two years in the making. When We Were Animals came out last month.

Geniuser - Epiphany
Danish, but now based in London, Geniuser's new album I Am has been crowdfunded and is out on the 22nd.

Vacances - Hearts
New Yorkers shifted to Europe for this, absorbing as much as possible on the way to create a new sound.

Los Blancos - Cadi
Welsh language stuff from Camarthen, this is off the new double-A which has Clarach on the other side. Out on Friday.

STNNNG - New National Anthem
Out in 2005 on the LP Dignified Sissy, this gets a shove from the band re NFL protests and Trumpian didacticism about it all.

Papernut Cambridge - New Forever
Off the new LP Outstairs Instairs which is out a week on Friday.

Castlebeat - Video Tape
More from New York, DIY goth-pop from Josh Hwang. The LP VHS came out in March.

Spray - Singing For England 2010
And as England are playing right now, here's Spray's wonderful record from the South African edition. Brilliant.

23 April 2018

More new songs for you.

The Left Outsides - All That Remains
A husband and wife duo from London, this is the title track to the new LP out on May 21.

Heart Beach - Perfect
From Hobart but now based in Montreal, this is off Haircut which came out last November.

Soft Science - Sooner
From Sacramento in California, this is off their forthcoming double-A single which is out in May.

MNNQNS - If Only They Could
I presume it's pronounced 'mannequins' but given the Only Connect missing vowels treatment. They're a four-piece from Rouen and this is off the EP Advertisement, out now.

Half Man Half Biscuit - Alehouse Futsal
NEW HMHB KLAXON!!! The new album No-one Cares About Your Artistic Hub So Get Your Fucking Hedge Cut. Out on 18 May, age has not withered them. Indeed, they appear to be as sharply acerbic as ever.

La Luz - California Finally
A four-piece from Seattle, this is off Floating Features which is out on May 11.

Andrew Hung - Say What You Want
The other half of Fuck Buttons to Benjamin John Power who has been recording as Blanck Mass. This is very different to Power's solo work which is more in keeping with the Fuck Buttons ethos. The album is Realisationship which came out last autumn.

Teleman - Submarine Life
New track from the acclaimed and innovative band who continue to push abstract digital pop boundaries.

Poptone - Go!
From LA, formed by ex-Bauhaus members Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, this is off their self-titled LP which is out in June.

Black Sedan - Love On Love
Heavily sampling the Charlie Chaplin flick The Great Dictator, this is the new single which will appear on the LP Adventure Lit Their Star which is out in June.

Slug - No Heavy Petting
A new one from Ian Black, ex of Fieldmusic. HiggledyPiggledy is the new LP, out a week ago.

Faithful Johannes - Ghosts In My Attic
Half of barely rap duo Outside Your House with his first non-christmas solo work. A two-track collection, Breakfast Included, is out now.

BBXO - Firestorm
Brilliant second track from Berlin-based Londoner Musa Okwonga and producer Krisz Kreuzer.

Jigsaw Sequence - Beyond The Veil
Scotsman Richard Tracey is Jigsaw Sequence and this is his new single.

Rodney Cromwell - Comrades
Lead track from the brilliant new EP Rodney's English Disco. Indietronica, he call it.

Public Service Broadcasting - People Will Always Need Coal (Vessels Remix)
Saturday was record shop day and PSB's contribution was a series of remixes from their Every Valley album. Vessels are a firm house favourite and theirs is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch.

Tuesday, 24 October 2017

24 October 2017

Another hour for you. Strap in.

Akiva - M.O.D
New single from Bedfordshire. A bit Placebo-ey, in a good way.

The Slow Readers Club - Lunatic
Mancunians with a new single taken from the session recordings for the forthcoming third LP.

Escobar - Terrible Man
We normally associate French contemporary music with the electronica scene, but here's some good old rock and roll from the album The Biggest Sound.

Modern Day Dukes - Okhrana
A two-bass rock band from Yorkshire with their single that came out a couple of weeks back.

Joss Cope - Your Broken Heart Is Not For Sale
Julian's little brother whose debut solo album, Unrequited Lullabies, is out now.

The Barbiturates - Fame
From Derry and making quite a name for themselves. An album is expected in the new year.

These are from Manchester and the LP Hidden Tapes And The Golden Tide is out early December.

30 August 2016

That time again

Fat White Family - Breaking Into Aldi
Not that we endorse the policy, Lias of the band explains ""This song is a post apocalyptic vision of a barely united United Kingdom bereft of quality German supermarkets and their insipid low prices; 'Breaking Into Aldi' is the anthem that never was, a call to arms for the senselessness of our future futility, an overcrowded shadow begging for a rerun, a sell out by sell outs for sell outs."

Fews - 100 Goosebumps
Taken from their LP MEANS which is getting well-deserved excellent reviews.

The Wave Pictures - The Running Man
A new track from the forthcoming LP Bamboo Diner In The Rain which promises to be excellent as ever. These lads are prolific.

Featured album: I, Ludicrous - It's like Everything Else
Three English Football Grounds
Preposterous Tales
The most underrated band in history, perhaps by their own singular lack of pursuit of fame. It's Like Everything Else was their first album, released in 1987. Little has changed, musically speaking, since.

Salary - Mini Moke
From Fremantle in Australia, this single came out in June.

Post War Glamour Girls - Welfare By Prozac
This is out on a split single with Menace Beach as the two Leeds bands celebrate Jumbo Records' 45th anniversary.

Bernaccia - Power To The Hills
To Newcastle next for some classy rock. This is their debut single with an LP knocking about somewhere soon.

Maggie8 - Connected
Back to Leeds and this is off a split single with our friends Ceiling Demons which comes out on September 23.

Teleman - Tangerine
The latest single taken from their second album Brilliant Sanity.

Toy - Fast Silver
A new track, and a portent of the new album Clear Shot which is due in autumn.

Featured album: I, Ludicrous - It's like Everything Else
Fabulous
This is all you need to know about I, Ludicrous. Piercing social comment and small-town tales wrapped in a dry humour.

The Rifles - Wall Around Your Heart
Off the album Big Life.

Sweet Williams - Come Swimming
A cover of a record by Plummets. The album Please let Me Sleep On Your Tonight is out on September 23.

The Immediate - Pockets
To Mold in North Wales off the EP Shadows And Ghosts with a full album to follow.

Fews - 10 Things (TVAM remix)
Another track from Fews which has been breathed on by Wiganer Joe Oxley in his TVAM guise.

Back in a week.

Tuesday, 5 April 2016

5 April 2016

Backlog more or less cleared, so the featured album makes a return alongside the usual gubbins.

Sir Robert Orange Peel - The Spiral
What's not to like? It's Mark E Smith reading the classified football results set to and electronic beat. No box left unticked there.

Rauschenberg - Bad Sister
Off their self-titled LP which came out in January.

The Entrepreneurs - Routine Lines
Danish noise-makers whose EP Tony Rominger came out a week or two ago. Really good stuff.

Featured Album: Teleman - Breakfast
In Your Fur
Lady Low
I went to see these on Saturday as they tour ahead of the release of their second LP, Brilliant Sanity. But we feature their 2014 debut Breakfast here. It's just delicious. Not a bad track on it.

Flies On You - Property Vacant
One of my favourites, the Leeds DIY-ers put out Etcetera last year. However, some of the offcuts that didn't make it onto the LP were collated into an EP which came out on Christmas Day. Gloriously, it's titled Fan Base Repellent.

False Nines - Can't Afford To Wonder
Mancunian tune-smiths, this was released last November, but has only just reached my radar. A band formed thanks to the power of social media.

Nine Tons - Bullpup
These noisy chaps are from Tyneside. No Frills came out in January.

Psychic Soviets - Full Greek Salad
Glasgow now, from November's Eight And A Half On Each Foot.

Kingsley Chapman and The Murder - The Children Scream
Great band from Middlesbrough and this is their new single.

TVAM - Gas And Air
Joe Oxley from Wigan follows up the brilliant Porsche Majeure with the equally fantastic Gas And Air.

Featured Album: Teleman - Breakfast
I'm Not In Control
Our third track from Breakfast is the hidden track at the end of the album. Probably their best. Sounds amazing live.

Karl Bartos - Life
Former Kraftwerker re-releases the 'lost' album Communication. Originally released in 2003, it still sounds box fresh.

El Speaker - Zapapaya feat. Jhnsy and Highdiwaan
Bit of a curio from Paris. A song about a duck and a monkey, apparently.

Erasmus - Ti Recordi Di Me
The Dewaele brothers - aka Soulwax - come back with another alter ego to record the soundtrack to the film Belgica. The album was launched in February.

Oligarkh - Hallelujah
And finally, some Russian electronica off the LP Anatoly. It's dead good.

More next week.

Tuesday, 16 February 2016

16 February 2016

Urgh, gross. As in, this is my 144th show.

The King Blues - Off With Their Heads
Three and a half years on, they've reformed and have lots to be angry about. This is the title track from the new LP due out on the 26th.

Penny Mob - War On The Streets
Don't know much about these, but they're from Coatbridge although now based in that there London. And they make cracking tunes.

Syd.31 - Hate
Angry Mancunian thrash punk. The EP Drowning In Air came out last December.

Featured album(ish)
Viola Beach - Boys That Sing/Cherry Vimto
Awful news at the weekend as Warrington indie-poppers Viola Beach were involved in a car crash in Sweden on their first overseas tour. All were killed. So instead of a normal featured album, I'm playing some of their tracks by way of small tribute.

Future Of The Left - The Limits Of Battleships
A taster off the forthcoming LP, due April 8, which is titled The Peace And Truce Of... Can not wait.

My-Ra Superstar - Pig Skull
A new one on me and another to add to the growing list of exciting South Wales stuff. This is from a while ago, off the 2014 album What Separates Us From The Beasts. Their latest one, Some Of These Objects Are Cursed, came out last October. And who doesn't love long album titles?

Nine Tons - No Go
Self-styled 'shautrock' band from Tyneside, this is off their debut album No Frills which came out last month.

Teleman - Dusseldorf
Another track taken from the forthcoming second LP Brilliant Sanity. Wonderful stuff.

Phobophobes - No Flavour
We played an old one of theirs last week, so let's bring it bang up to date. This is the new single. Their live shows are getting rave reviews too.

Shonen Knife - Jump Into The New World
35 years and still going strong. The new LP, their 19th, is called Adventure and comes out in March. What a treat it is to be alive at the same time as these.

Featured album(ish)
Viola Beach - Swings And Waterslides
It's just all so terribly sad. This is the latest single which has made it into the top 40 after a bit of a social media campaign.

Larusso - Fever
Proving there's more to Utah than Mormonism, this is the Salt Lake City band's new single, following up the 2014 album Life In Static.

Ulrika Spacek - I Don't Know
This is amazing. Krautrock lives on. These are from Berlin and it's off their debut album, The Album Paranoia.

Yeyey - Wild Things
Ben Shepard is Yeyey, alumnus of numerous acts but most known for Uzi And Ari. The new album is The Vision and it's sublime.

Applescal - Leone Highway
House favourite producer Pascal Terstappen is back with an EP also called Leone Highway on the highly impressive Atomnation label. It came out last month and will be spinning for a while yet.

Here's that on YouTube:

and Soundcloud:

Doing owt next week? Great, I'll see you back here.

Tuesday, 29 December 2015

29 December 2015

Last show of the year, but none of this looking back and introspection. With christmas, football and weeks off, I've a massive backlog of stuff to get through, so it's business as usual.

Unqualified Nurse - You Pulled Through
Noisiness from Derby. From the album Put It On The Line which came out in November.

The Crookes - The Lucky Ones
A new track, available as a free download, from the forthcoming album of the same name. That's out on January 29.

Nai Harvest - Melanie
Staying with Sheffield, a new single from the LP Hairball which came out last spring.

Featured album
LCD Soundsystem - Disco Infiltrator
LCD Soundsystem - Give It Up
This week, it's the self-titled debut LP from these which came out in 2005 and set a new standard in electro-pop.

Teleman - Fall In Time
A taster of a new album, following on from the huge success of Breakfast.

Actor - Uppercut
From Leeds and with a title like that, you'd expect it to pack a punch.

Jonny Firth - Mountain
We we dismayed by the break-up of Crybabycry, but front man Jonny Firth continues to make music on his own. Rich blues.

The Baggios - O Azar Me Consome
And continuing the blues theme, from their self-titled LP from 2011.

LewRey - What's Up?
More local stuff from their debut EP, also called What's Up?

Retroject - Lesson Learned
A new track from the Doncaster indie-merchants. Hopefully a portent of and longer player.

Featured album
LCD Soundsystem - Movement
Another one from our featured album, a record which hasn't really dated.

Super Besse - Mne Vse Odno
'I Do Not Care' to you. These are great. They're from Minsk and I've played them a fair bit before. The LP is 63610.

Origami Horses - The King Of Happenstance
These hail from Canterbury and the LP In Love And In Dub came out earlier this month on the always interesting Metal Postcards records.

Electric Eye - Bless
To Norway now. This is a delight and is off the album Different Sun which is due out in February.

Kelly Lee Owens - Arthur
And finally, the B-side of Owens's new single, Lucid. It's out on February 16.

Here's that on YouTube:

and Soundcloud:

And we're back next week.

Tuesday, 5 May 2015

5 May 2015

All refreshed after the Bank Holiday? Let's do this.

The Vinyl Records - Whims
And we'll start in New Delhi and the title track from their January EP. Perky, quirky, excellent.

Brawlers - Windowmisser
The first of a number of tracks from Leeds bands this week. This is off their debut LP Romantic Errors Of Our Youth which came out last month on Alcopop! Records.

Thee Faction - Choose Your Enemy
And an even longer album title... Songs That Remind The Class Of The Glorious Victory To Come And The Work That Must Be Done To Get There. There's an election soon, y'know.

Cover Version Corner
The Wedding Present/Heathers - Dalliance
Back to Leeds and possibly my favourite Weddoes track, definitely off my favourite of their albums, Seamonsters from 1991. LA's Heathers put their version out on an EP called I Know (Part-Time Punk Session) in May last year.

Flies On You - Action Stations!
And yet another Leeds band... I finally got hold of their latest album Etcetera this week and it is excellent. Did I mention that election?

Crybabycry - Love Got Me Wrong
To Wakey now and one of my favourite bands du jour with a new track.

Serpent Power - Last Ape In Space
Ian Skelly, formerly of The Coral, and Paul Molloy of The Zutons with some contemporary San Francisco psych.

The Vaccines - Dream Lover
A couple of tracks that lean more to the commercial side now, but I'll be independent in my own choice of music thank you. Everything I know suggests I shouldn't like The Vaccines, but I do, so there. This is the second single taken from the album English Graffiti which comes out on the 25th.

The Maccabees - Marks To Prove It
A new single from a forthcoming and as yet unnamed album. Ploughing a unique furrow.

Nueva Costa - Glacé
And now for something completely different... This is lovely. It came out last September on an EP called Ave Del Paraiso. That's all I've got.

One Degree of Separation
Pete & The Pirates - Blood Gets Thin
Teleman - Not In Control
I've played Teleman quite a bit and here's another track from their acclaimed debut album Breakfast, possibly my favourite track off it. But while I've played Teleman often, I've not played the band that spawned them before. Three-quarters of Teleman are three of the Pirates from Pete & The Pirates. And that track is pretty much perfect.

The Smiling Disease - The Klingon Race
A debut album from Olly Moss, bassist from Evans The Death. But as well as a debut, it's also a collection of recordings from the last six years, hence the title Beach Bodies: 2008-2014.

(m+a) - Ninja ft Spank Rock
The m is Michele Ducci, the a is Alessandro Degli Agnoli and that track is ace. Off the EP Anyway Milkyway which came out last month.

Julian Cope - Double Vegetation
And finally, great news for gig-goers in the area, such as myself, as the second-best recording artist ever is playing Holmfirth in July. I've got my ticket already and I'm excited beyond belief. So here's a track from the 1991 album Peggy Suicide.

Here that on YouTube:

and Soundcloud:

and we'll do it again next week. See you.

Tuesday, 24 March 2015

24 March 2015

Let's get on with this eh.

The Retro Spankees - Here We Go
Here we go indeed. Seemed a decent enough idea to kick things off with. These are from Northampton and this is off Meagre Vengeance which came out last November.

Jacco Gardner - Find Yourself
We've played this chap from Hoorn in the Netherlands before, quite a while ago. His new album is Hypnophobia which is out in May and this is the first single. Almost prog in places and a bit grandiose, but none the worse for it.

Dick Diver - Tearing The Posters Down
This took a few listens before I really got it, but it does work. Quite a simple sound, but not in a bad way. They're from Melbourne - Australia not Lincolnshire - and the album is Melbourne, Florida.

Cover Version Corner
Siouxsie And The Banshees/Junks - Hong Kong Garden
I'm fairly sure there is tongue in cheek on that Junks version. I mean, the original, their debut single from 1978, carries that stereotyped leitmotif that tells you it's Oriental. Junks seem to have J-popped it up in an over-the-top fashion. Equally, I might be making this up. Anyway, Junks are from Hong Kong and that's their debut single.

Django Django - Reflections
The second track taken from their second album Born Under Saturn which is out in May. Can not wait.

Teleman - Strange Combinations
Following on from their acclaimed album Breakfast, it's a new track from these. Hopefully a foretaste of a new album.

The Lovely Eggs - Magic Onion
Husband and wife duo from Lancaster go all Jefferson Airplane on us in their new single, the first release from the new album This Is Our Nowhere which comes out in May. They're touring at the moment and are well worth checking out.

The Wave Pictures - Fire Alarm
Another track from the excellent album Great Big Flamingo Burning Moon, written and recorded in conjunction with Billy Childish. If this isn't in the top half-dozen albums of the year come December, we're in for some treats later in the year.

The Landseers - Wasted
New track from this cross-continental supergroup. Part Welsh, part whatever the collective term for people from Connecticut is. Available as a free download from their bandcamp page.

Du Dauphine - Lose My Soul
I've been after playing these a while and finally have my hands on something. Off their self-titled debut EP, these are local and have clearly spared nothing in terms of production values.

One Degree of Separation
TV Smith - Immortal Rich
The Hurriers - Truth And Justice
TV Smith, still got the hump with society a long time on from The Adverts. That's off the album Immortal Rich from 1995. Then The Hurriers, from Barnsley and off an EP also called Truth And Justice. The link is that both tracks feature on the Orgreave Justice compilation available from Philosophy Football. There are some great tracks on there from an impressive array of artists - some you know, some you won't. And it's for a good cause.

Bloodflower - People/Places
I don't know anything about these other than it's off an EP called Noise and I like it. Very retro.

Outside Your House - Photos Out There
Slacker rap? Is that a term? Whatever. Laid back stuff and I like it. They're from Durham and this is off the new EP The Ones That Left Town available as a pay-what-you-like download from their bandcamp page.

Transmission 13 - Jackson Pollock
And finally... We've played these before, again a long time ago. They're from Manchester, although augmented here by Canadian producer Antonio de Braga. This is off the album Vanishing Point.

Here's that on Youtube:

and Soundcloud:

Back next week with more treats for you, you lovely people.

Wednesday, 13 August 2014

12 August 2014

Unceremoniously bumped for pre-season football last week, this week's show is what I'd have played last week had Town not had Premier League opposition. Remember last week? Town even had a manager back then. Halcyon days, those... Anyway, back to it.

The Horrors - In And Out Of Sight
Great opener to any show. Off their album Luminous which came out in May, that's the latest single. They're a band I feel I probably ought not to like, but every now and then they put out something really good like this. It's almost infuriating.

Heavyball - Another Country
Love these to bits. This is their latest. When we getting an LP, fellers?

Honeyblood - Super Rat
Off the album Honeyblood, that's glorious. They're a two-piece from Glasgow.

Cover Version Corner
Marvin Gaye/Gil Scott Heron - Inner City Blues
Released ten years apart, but no less relevant in 1981 when Gil Scott Heron recorded it as it was in 1971. Suppose it's no less relevant now as well, another 33 years on.

Kindred Shins - The Smoker Never Quits
From last year's Yes To Rioting Notoriety, that's some splendid bluesy rock.

Naomi Punk - Television Man
Looking way into the future now. The album this is off, also called Television Man, isn't out until October. Wishing my life away...

Even As We Speak - Falling Down The Stairs
Going back a bit with this one, to 1993. From Sydney, this came out on an LP called Feral Pop Frenzy.

Kult Country - Trembling Moon
These are from Manchester. I missed this when it came out in June. Happy to have it on my radar now.

Owl John - Red Hand
Based in Mull and LA it says here, which I suppose is nice work if you can get it. Really like that though. Not sure what it reminds me of.

Pow! - 66
I know pretty much nothing about these, just that that's off an album called Hi-Tech Boom which came out in July and that I like it.

One Degree of Separation
Bedlam - Harvest Moon
Harry Nilsson - Coconut
Supreme silliness from Harry Nilsson, off the 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson. Before that, Cozy Powell and Bedlam from their self-titled 1973 long player. The link? Reservoir Dogs.

Teleman - Skeleton Dance
This is the latest release from the critically-acclaimed album Breakfast, which is ace. A complete joy.

Grimes ft. Blood Diamond - Go
A bit more commercial than her previous stuff, moreso than what got me interested in the first place anyway, but not completely terrible.

Eat Lights, Become Lights - Velocet Vir Nesat
Still not sure if that's a decent name for a band or not. Still, pretty decent stuff. From the album Into Forever which came out in May.

All that in a combination of YouTube and Soundcloud below:

Should be back next week as normal.

15 April 2014

Lots of new stuff this week, so let's get right to it.

Peace - World Pleasure
The first release from their forthcoming second album, the tricky one so the cliché goes. They made quite a splash with their first and this is a promising start to the second.

Ruen Brothers - Aces
Scunthorpe rockabilly. It works. Rupert and Henry Stansall are the aforementioned brothers and there's an album coming.

Knuckle - Living Hell
A two-piece blues outfit from right here in Huddersfield. I've seen them live and they are loud and energetic. This track is available as a pay-what-you-like download from their bandcamp page.

Cover Version Corner
The Monkees/Robert Wyatt - I'm A Believer
That was Robert Wyatt's first solo single post-Soft Machine in 1974. There was something of a kerfuffle when he performed it on Top Of The Pops when a producer thought losing the wheelchair was a good idea. Before that, of course the Monkees. From 1966 and the album More Of The Monkees.
Wyatt also lends his name to the phenomenon of Wyatting, by which you stick on a very challenging record umpteen times on a jukebox and clear off. Strange House In The Snow by Teardrop Explodes is a good one.

Duane Eddy - Rebel Rouser
From 1958 and the album Have 'Twangy' Guitar Will Travel, but getting a release on Record Store Day which is this Saturday. It's a fun record and it's good to introduce this sort of stuff, back when rock and roll began, to a new generation.

Wolf Alice - Moaning Lisa Smile
Brilliant. Very grungey, but the vocals offset against the rough-edged guitars lift it to something else. That's off the album Creature Songs which is out on May 26.

Black Lips - Funny
A band that have become in vogue simply by never changing and allowing fashion to catch up with them. That's a very now sound and comes off the album Underneath The Rainbow which came out last month.

The Horrors - So Now You Know
New from these, off the forthcoming album Luminous which is out on May 5. Sounds a bit like late-period Simple Minds, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

One Degree of Separation
The Smiths - The Headmaster Ritual
Nirvana - School
Nirvana from their debut album Bleach from back in 1989. Before that, The Smiths at the height of their powers and the Meat is Murder album from 1985. One of the great intros.
The link should be obvious.

Honeyblood - Killer Bangs
A two-piece from Glasgow - Stina Tweeddale and Shona McVicar make up the band - that's off their self-titled debut which is out in July. Great stuff.

Oxygen Thieves - To Boast
To the Wirral now, and some more new grunge type stuff. Reckon it's safe to say Nirvana were an influence here. That's off the EP We found The thieves which is out on May 5.

Teleman - 23 Floors Up
These have been touring with Maximo Park, but are about to embark on a tour of their own and are well worth seeking out. This is off Breakfast which is out on June 2. Sounds a little bit Floyd, methinks.

Todd Terje - Inspector Norse
He's from Norway. Inspector Norse. See what you did there. His first album, It's Album Time, came out last week and has done extremely well so far. No better reason to play another track off it than that.

Applescal - The Veil
And to finish, another new cut from Amsterdam producer and DJ Pascal Terstappen. We're fans.

Here's most of that on YouTube:

And most of it on Soundcloud:

Back next week...

20 May 2013

A lot of instrumental electronica today. But don't let that put you off... But first, something topical.

Billy Bragg - Sexuality
John: His biggest hit from back in 1991, off the album 'Don't Try This At Home', and full of still-relevant themes as the marriage equality bill is currently being discussed in the Commons. Kirsty MacColl on backing vocals - still much missed.

Kraftwerk - Expo 2000
John: Not one of their more well-known ones. Imagine life in the 21st century.... That's a non-album single from 1999.
Carolyn: So life probably not that different.

Apache Tears - Barricades
John: A local band, these guys met at Rastrick High School. I heard this a couple of weeks ago and was fair blown away. It's their debut single which comes out on June 3 and I'll certainly be keeping an eye out in future. And was that a hint of of the Manic Street Preachers I could hear?
Carolyn: I see what you mean. A little bit, perhaps.

Cover Version Corner
Thin Lizzy/Happy Mondays - The Boys Are Back In Town
John: Different and yet immediately familiar, that Happy Mondays track was a B-side and appeared on their Greatest Hits album of 1999. Thin Lizzy, of course, requires no introduction. Off 'Jailbreak' from 1976.

Vessels - Attica
John: I'm absolutely blown away by that. Now, we went to see Public Service Broadcasting last week which gave lie to the notion that playing electronic music live is easy and just a few key presses. This was recorded live at The Garage in Leeds - that being their home town - and is an impressive sight.
Carolyn: I remember seeing the Pet Shop Boys and Chris Lowe didn't look like he was up to much. But PSB were working really hard. It kind of changed my outlook a bit.
John: This single came out last month. A real cinematic quality to it.

Jon Hopkins - Open Eye Signal
John: That split the room... I flippin' well love it and have had it on a loop for much of last weekend.
Carolyn: It wasn't bad, but I'm not as into it as you clearly are.
John: That's off the album 'Immunity' which is out June 3.

Physics House Band - Titan
John: Public Service Broadcasting plugged these on their Twitter last week, so naturally I followed it up and... wow. Three lads from Brighton, a multitude of instruments and a real energy to it. That's available as a free download and is off their debut EP 'Horizons/Rapture'.

One Degree of Separation
Jesus And Mary Chain - Some Candy Talking
Primal Scream - Invisible City
John: That's the new single off the latest Primal Scream long player 'More Light' which came out last week. Before that was the Jesus And Mary Chain from back in 1986. The link is Bobby Gillespie, driving force behind Primal Scream who was in Jesus And Mary Chain up to 1985.

Teleman - Steam Train Girl
John: Three ex-Pete And The Pirates combining to make something quite lovely.

Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder
John: Now, Daft Punk. You can't fail to have heard that they've a new record out - 'Random Access Memories'. It's all about collaborations and the debut single, Get Lucky, is precisely what you'd expect of a Nile Rodgers record. Polished within in an inch of it's life, but... but what? And some of the other tracks on the album leave me similarly cold, but this? This is a work of art. Giorgio Moroder talks through his career and it's period equipment for each stage of his life. But then, they also said they'd given him a microphone from the future at one stage, so that might be horse manure.

Keel Her - Don't Try This At Home
John: To prove the power of social media... We played Keel Her last week and Rose - who pretty much is Keel Her - got in touch with me on Twitter, saying thanks for playing her record. I said if she keeps making great music, I'd play some more, so she sent me this.
Carolyn: I hope she doesn't think you're some media mogul or this station gets a million listeners. But it was very nice anyway.

Junip - Your Life, Your Call
John: The latest single from these, off the album 'Junip'. Right out of the Hot Chip/Dutch Uncles envelope.

Still Corners - The Trip
John: Still Corners are Greg Hughes and Tessa Murray from London and this is the first track off the album 'Strange Pleasures' which came out a fortnight ago.

Here's your YouTube playlist with all that on bar the Teleman record (see link above for that one). Bank Holiday next week, so we're on holidays.
