35 years sinec Blue Monday...

Brooders - Lie
New on the Come Play With Me singles club, from Leeds.

The Men That Will Not Not Be Blamed For Nothing - Baby Farmer
London steampunk veterans with a new LP, Double Negative.

Petbrick - Crack Baby
A side-project from one of those noisy buggers from Big Lad (formerly Shitwife).

Youth Man - I Don't Know

Indoor Pets - So Soon
Formerly Get Inuit, this is their first track from the Kentish band under the new name.

Shame - Friction
Another one from the Leeds band's album Songs Of Praise which will be among the best of 2018.

The Big Pink - Blue Monday
Orkestra Obsolete - Blue Monday
Two covers of the New Order banger which is 35 years old. First, a slower, darker, gloomier version from London electro-rockers then something made entirely on 1930s instruments including autoharps and theremins recorded for BBC Arts a couple of years ago.

Autobahn - The World Around You Is Fractured Somehow
A new single from the Leeds krautrockers following on from the critically acclaimed LP The Moral Crossing.

George the Poet & Maverick Sabre - Follow The Leader
And also featuring the vocals of Jorja Smith, terrific stuff from them all.

Epic Beard Men - Two Different Worlds
B Dolan and Sage Francis are those Epic Beard Men and this is off the new LP Season 1 which was released along with a browser based beat-em-up game where you take one of the guys and punch tiki-torch wielding Nazis. Great fun.

Vessels - PantherTek
Back to Leeds for a new track from the electronica masters.

The Night Programme - We Are Chaos
And also new from friend of the show Paul Foster off his new album Electrodad.

Cuban Boys - Lost Battle Of Brook Green/Rational Dress Society
As it was International Women's Day last week, a track from the album Machines about womens involvement in the industrial revolution and engineering more generally.

Gavin Martin - I Want To Tell You Something feat Vito
Recalling a golden age of music journalism. Music journalist turned artist from Bangor, this is off Talking Musical Revolutions.

Another track from the excellent new LP Songs From The Sides of Lorries. Utterly unique, don't ever change.

Autobahn - Execution/Rise
And another from the Leeds post-punkers' new album The Moral Crossing.

17 October 2017

Hello.

Django Django - Tic Tac Toe
Way back whenever, the Djangoes were the first band we played on the radio. Now they're about to unleash their third LP. Marble Skies comes out in early 2018.

Johnny Kills - End Game
A third single from the Brighton/London grunge/surf rockers.

Treeboy & Arc - Merge
A Leeds quartet with a track from the forthcoming EP Not Yet.

Autobahn - Future
Still in Leeds, another track from the LP The Moral Crossing which is out in two weeks.

Duck - Stereo
Keeping it Yorkshire, Duck are from Sheffield and this is off the album FaceAche.

The Soap Opera - Eggs To Hatch And Cats To Kill

Filthy Friends - Windmill
From Portland, Oregon, this is off Invitation which came out in August.

Terminal Gods - Interplay
London post-punkers with a track from the album Meridian which also came out in August.

Mount Kimbie - Delta
A first album in four years, Love What Survives is out now.

Sir Robert Orange Peel - Hurricane
Apt. Off the EP Plates Of Meat.

Psycho Comedy - The Hangman
Liverpool, with it's successful psych festival, is pretty much the home of UK psychedelia. That's where these are from. More than a hint of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band there.

Astrobal - Australasie feat. Laetitia Sadier
Emmanuel Mario is Astrobal and this is the title track to his 2016 LP which features a number of collaboration such as this with the Stereolab singer.

Hirola - Hollow
Bristol-based producers with a track from their self-titled mini-album.

Boobs Of Doom - Aretkistapha
Great name. Scottish 'morbid misanthropes, soundtracking the end of the world' with their tenth LP eXXpre$$ion.

12 September 2017

Ow do

Battery Operated Orchestra - Radiation
"Irony-free synth-pop", they call it. This is the title track off the new LP from the Brighton husband and wife duo.

Kosmonaut - Silver Star
With hints of Dinosaur Jr and Teenage Fanclub, this is off the album Misfits On The Horizon.

Oh Sees - The Static God
Formerly Thee Oh Sees, this is the lead track from the new LP Orc. A full-frontal assault on the senses.

Magic Mountain - Zodiac
Made up from various parts of Leeds bands Pulled Apart By Horses, Menace Beach, Grammatics and Mother Vulpine, it should work. And it does.

Bad Breeding - Endless Impossibility
Heavy stuff from Stevenage off the second LP Divide.

Hope - Kingdom
Goth from Berlin now. Moody.

Autobahn - The Moral Crossing
New one from Leeds' Autobahn, the title track to the new LP due out in November.

Jon Jour - Nutcase With A Past
From the reliable Broken Down Records, something to be filed under curiosity.

Public Service Broadcasting - Turn No More feat. James Dean Bradfield
The latest single from the Every Valley album featuring the Manic Street Preachers singer.

Sisteray - White Knuckle Joyride (Feral Five remix)
The track appears on the EP 15 Minutes, inspired by the famous Warhol quote, while Feral Five "went cosmic" on it.

Cobby & Litten - Johnny Rockhead
From the LP Boothferry which came out in June that I'm only just getting round to.

Myka 9 & Ceschi - Satellite
Terrific experimental hip-hop. Super stuff.

The Night Programme - Lost Property Department

Vessels - Mobilise
From the forthcoming album The Great Distraction, due September 29.

Next week, yeah?

Tuesday, 14 July 2015

14 July 2015

Yep. Still here.

Flux Pavilion - Blow The Roof
Start with a bang. Off the album of the same name that came out in 2013, Flux Pavilion is Joshua Steele from Towcester.

Evans The Death - Terrified
Odd name for a band, but hey ho. And a band rather than a single person. And a cracking tune. Off Expect Delays that came out in March.

The HolyDrug Couple - French Movie Theme
I don't think we've had anything from Chile before. Might have - not sure. Anyway, that's where these are from. Moonlust is the album and serves to remind me that I still fancy doing an all-instrumental show one day.

Cover Version Corner
Jimi Hendrix/The Cure - Purple Haze
Not the greatest cover, I grant you. That's off a compilation called Stone Free: A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix which features a number of artists covering his tunes. Before that, unmistakeably Hendrix. Nothing else has ever sounded quite like that. Off 1967's Are You Experienced.

Sleaford Mods - No-one's Bothered
Another one from the new LP Key Markets. Go get it.

Shopping - Why Wait?
More social commentary from the album Why Choose? which comes out in October. Good tune too.

Autobahn - Society
And yet more social commentary. From Leeds this time. And probably record of the week. Dissemble is the new album and it's out at the back end of August.

Bully - Trying
To Nashville now. Not the greatest name for a band, but what a great voice. Their debut album is called Feels Like and came out late last month.

Dymaxion Groove - The Greatest Power
Baltimore now and Jad Fair and Jason Willett from seminal post-punk outfit Half Japanese have their own side project and this is it. The album is of the same name and is out in September.

Kingsley Chapman and The Murder - Lovers
This is great. Teessider Chapman, ex of the Chapman Family, with a splendid bit of song writing. A hint of the Nick Caves about it, in the very nicest sense of the term.

One Degree of Separation
Paul Smith and The Intimations - Break Me Down
Nano Kino - Eyes Before Words
And staying in the north-east, two records from Maximo Park members. Front-man Smith has a new LP, Contradictions, out in August. Nano Kino's self-titled album came out in March. And why not - spread your wings, try something different and then come back together for the day job.

Lanks - Hole Me Closer
Melbourne's Will Cuming is Lanks and the EP Thousand Piece Puzzle came out last month.

Victories At Sea - Up
This really is ace. They're from Birmingham and this comes from an EP called In Memory Of. A bit retro, a bit New Order at times, and yet entirely contemporary.

LV - Jump And Reach
And we finish with a collaboration between London producer LV and Armenian pianist Tigran Hammasyan. Unusual combination, outstanding results.

Here's your YouTube selection:

More next week as usual.

Tuesday, 14 October 2014

14 October 2014

Packed show, so no mucking about.

Yeah Yeah Noh - She Pulls The Petal From The Flower
Their first release in 28 years. They reformed in 2012 and are now gearing up for more releases. Good. Belting stuff.

The John Steel Singers - State Of Unrest
From Brisbane and off the album Everything's A Thread that came out in July.

Mary Joanna and The Southern Electrikk - Wasted
A band that's already split up, which is impressive by any standards. This came out last month, but a bad gig split the band. Mary Joanna is back recording though, so we'll see what happens from here.

Cover Version Corner
Stereolab/Greys - The Noise Of Carpet
Greys are from Toronto and have rocked up the tone of this cracker from the 1996 Stereolab album Emperor Tomato Ketchup.

The Wave Pictures - Pea Green Coat
Absolutely fantastic. The best rock harmonica work since Lee Brilleaux was a lad. Off their forthcoming album Great Big Flamingo Burning which is a collaborative effort with Wild Billy Chyldish. It's due out in February next year. Can't wait.

Deers - Castigadas En El Granero
To Spain now. Formerly five but now four, it translates roughly as Grounded In The Barn. From the album Barn.

Menace Beach - Come On Give Up
We've had these many times before, but there's finally an album due. Ratworld is due in January.

Warmhammer - Wet Blanket
Off a split cassette with house favourite Keel Her on Suplex records, this came out about three weeks ago.

Autobahn - New Age
Another cover - I should have saved this, but couldn't resist throwing it in. It's an old Blitz number but seems about as relevant as ever. Available as a free download.

Retroject - Webster's English
To Doncaster now and something of a change in tack to a slower, more ska and dub influenced sound. Not that there is the slightest thing wrong with that. Dear me no. Also available as a free download.

One Degree of Separation
Fat White Family - I Am Mark E Smith
The Fall - Mountain Energei
That's the new single from the Fat White Family and it's a blatant excuse to shoehorn in another Fall track, this time from The Real New Fall LP from 2003.

Pinkshinyultrablast - Umi
From St Petersburg, this is off a forthcoming LP, their debut. Delightful.

Pix - A Way To Say Goodbye
Doesn't it make you sick? Hannah Brooks is 19. Nineteen. She's making us all look dead bad. How nice is that?

Objekt - Ganzfeld
Finally, some German electronica. Off a split 12" with Dopplereffekt. Banging.

Here's some of that on YouTube:

and some of it on Soundcloud:

We're not here next week - football, again - so back in a fortnight.

Tuesday, 29 July 2014

29 July 2014

Still on the goofballs. I'll level with you - having this to prepare is at least giving me something to focus on during the week. Anyway, no time for self-pity. Let's crack on.

Joanna Gruesome - Jerome (Liar)
Show favourites from Cardiff return with a split single alongside Trust Fund. Not sure how they're going to spin that into a 12" at 100 seconds long, but hey ho. It's out in September.

Toy - As We Turn
Not my favourite off Join The Dots, but still better than most things around at the moment. This is the new single.

Menace Beach - Lowtalkin'
From Leeds, this is the reverse of the double-A side with Tennis Court that we played a few weeks ago. Out on September 1, top stuff as ever.

Cover Version Corner
Dionne Warwick/Julia Holter - Don't Make Me Over
Two great voices. Julia Holter's version came out yesterday on a double-A with a cover of Hello Stranger, the old Barbara Lewis record. Warwick's version is from 1962, her debut single in fact. You can find that on the album Presenting Dionne Warwick.

Kid Wave - All I Want
When I was putting the show together, I don't remember liking that as much as I did just then. Terrific. That's their debut single and comes out on August 8.

Keel Her - Single Room
Big fan of hers, here's more evidence as to her brilliance. Always inventive, always worth listening to.

Tacocat - Bridge To Hawaii
How good's that? Not sure logistics is their thing though, as wherever you started building the bridge, it'd take a lot of doing. That's the first release from their new album NVM.

Autobahn - Pale Skin
I've been after playing these for a wee while now. They're from Leeds and this is off their EP called 2. It's right up my street, that's for sure.

The Drums - Magic Mountain
A new album is coming from these. Encyclopedia is the title and it hits the shelves on September 23. This is the first single and if it's indicative of the rest of the LP, it'll be a winner.

Horsebeach - Dull
Odd title, great tune. It came out in February but totally passed me by at the time. Happy to have rectified that.

One Degree of Separation
Fredrika Stahl - Midday Moon
DJ Shadow - High Noon
Another great voice on Stockholm's Fredrika Stahl. A beautiful record, that. That's off an LP called Off To Dance which came out last year. Second, off Pre-Emptive Strike from 1998, unmistakeably DJ Shadow. 12pm is your connection, obviously.

Gidge - I Fell In Love
Gidge are also Swedish. Jonatan Nilsson and Ludvig Stolterman, more sepcifically. That's the first release from their forthcoming and as yet untitled debut LP.

Dayglo Maradona - Rock Section
Julian Cope, right. He wrote this novel called One Three One. It's brilliant and the (anti) hero is called Rock Section. He (Rock Section) had hits in the '80s and '90s and Cope has made some of them; fill the back story, like. This is Section's 1989 smash as baggy morphed into rave and all that. Either way, it stands up on it's own. Available now as a pay-what-you-like download from Bandcamp.

Here's that on YouTube:

More next week.
