22 January 2018

Another week, so let's get it started the right way.

Eels - The Deconstruction
The title track to the new album which comes out on April 6.

Yasuaki Shimizu - Suiren
Released in 1982, the album Kakashi has had a reissue on Palto Flats records.

Ought - Disgraced In America
Another track from the highly anticipated forthcoming album Room Inside The World.

The DB3 - Devil's Driver
A garage rock/surf guitar trio from Portsmouth, this is off the LP Thee DB3 which has very much a motoring theme running through it..

Vile Assembly - Suicide Feast
Overtly political punk from Liverpool off the album Fattened By The Horrors Of War which came out at the back end of last year.

The Spook School - Body
Another track from the album Could It Be Different? which is out on Friday.

King Woman - I Wanna Be Adored
A new single from San Francisco's King Woman, originally the solo project of singer Kristina Esfandiari which morphed to encompass the whole band. The album Created in The Image Of Suffering is out now.

Xylaroo - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
Another quirky cover, this is the B side to the debut single Sunshine from London-based sisters Holly and Coco Chant.

Tigercub - Faking Laughter
A track from the EP Evolve Or Die which was launched alongside a signature craft beer, Safemode.

From - Bellandonna
Taken from the album Y.O.U which came out on the 12th but was recorded way back in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Trevor Jackson and his alter-ego Underdog are responsible.

Nova Flares - Gut Splinter
From Kentucky, this slice of instrumentalism is off the EP Nova Flares which is out on March 9.

Nathan Fake - Sunder
The title track to the new album which is out on February 23.

Daniel Avery - Slow Fade
And another title track to something new, this time out on April 6.

Jay Glass Dubs vs Guerilla Toss - Skull Dub
And finally, a brilliant bit of Greek dub from last autumn. Guerilla Toss are a New York-based post-punk outfit while Athenian producer Dimitris Papadatos goes by the moniker Jay Glass Dubs. Absolutely fantastic, the EP is titled Jay Glass Dubs vs Guerilla Toss.

6 December 2016

Evenin'

Oi Polloi - Our Winged Sisters
From the LP Saorsa which came out last month. It's about bees and the decimation of their population.

Bonfire Nights - Ego Death
From Australia, but now out of London, a slice of psychedelia from a new split single - Tripwires are on the other side - which is out on Friday.

Vukovar - The Three Shades
Not sure how you'd classify this, as if that's important. It came out late October.

Featured album: Broadcast - Tender Buttons
I Found The F
Black Cat
This week we go back to 2005 for our featured LP. This was Broadcast's third and while critically acclaimed it didn't do much by way of sales. It was a turn to the minimalist and the lyrically surreal and it's not an easy listen, though extremely rewarding.

The Wave Pictures - Now I Want To Hoover My Brain Clean
The second single taken from Bamboo Diner In The Rain. Do go see them if ever you get chance.

The Cravats - Blurred
A new one from the Redditch punk veterans. It came out as a limited edition single at the back end of October.

The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Don't Get Lost
From the new LP Third World Pyramid which came out on October 28. Brilliant.

Vaguess - Cop Like Me
To California for this, a punk record about minority deaths at the hands of the police.

Ashley Reaks - Slugs And Snails Forever
Experimental time again as Reaks releases his third album of the year, Growth Spurts.

Featured album: Broadcast - Tender Buttons
Corproreal
It all came to a sadly premature end for Broadcast in 2011 as singer Trish Keenan died of pneumonia after contracting swine flu in Australia though fellow founder member James Cargill still makes music under the same banner.

ESP - Mars Radio
Welsh producer Jamie Howells is ESP and this is off his new album Blue Books which is terrific.

MOTSA - Petrichor feat Sophie Lindinger
To Vienna next and a slice from the new EP Petricolour which is out now.

Nathan Fake - Degreelessness feat Prurient
Fake recently signed to Ninja Tune and this is the first release for them. Just a 12" for now, with an album to follow in due course.

3 December 2012

Packed the box for tonight and didn't get anywhere near playing it all.

Mystery Jets - Saviour (The Hale Bop)
John: New one from these off the album Radlands which was out earlier this year

Boards of Canada - Dawn Chorus
John: Seeing as the Bank of England is about to be run by a Canadian
Carolyn: Didn't like that at all
John: Ten years old, off 2002's Geogaddi

Foals - Inhaler
John: New one from these off Holy Fire which comes out in February. Bit of a harder edge to previous stuff.

Cover Version Corner
Paul Revere and the Raiders/Modern Rocketry - (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone
John: There are dozens of covers of this. We could have chosen the Sex Pistols, Minor Threat, Johnny Thunders, The Farm... Instead, we went for Modern Rocketry's 12" mix on the basis this is supposed to show two totally different interpretations. That was from 1983, Paul Revere from 1966.

Tame Impala - Mind Mischief
John: New from these off the album Lonerism
Carolyn: Really like that. We've had a few from these before haven't we?
John: We have. One of the albums of the year

The Damned - New Rose
John: Their debut single from 1976. They played Leeds last week and stormed it.

Delphic - Baiya
John: It went a bit '80s in the middle there.
Carolyn: It started a bit '80s and stayed there. Not that there's anything wrong with that
John: That's off the album Collections which comes out in January

Majestyy - The Notion
John: With two Ys, that's available as a free download from their Soundcloud page

One Degree of Separation
Martin Rossiter - Drop Anchor
Gene - Haunted By You
John: The Gene track is from 1995 and their debut album Olympian. They were notable for being a bit Smiths-esque
Carolyn: A bit? Very.
John: Martin Rossiter took a long sabbatical and is back with this single which is off the album The Defenestration Of St Martin which came out last week and is a sublime piece of song writing

Nathan Fake - Paean
John: Off the album Steam Days, that's out sort of now-ish. I think

Seasick Steve - Don't Know Why She Loves Me But She Do
John: Love that. If that hasn't got your foot tapping, something's wrong.
Carolyn: Mine was going
John: He's 71 (to the best of anyone's knowledge) is Steven Gene Wold and makes a lot of his own instruments. I've seen him play a single-string contraption, guitars made from hubcaps, cigar boxes... That's off last year's album Can't Teach An Old Dog New Tricks

Miike Snow - Paddling Out
John: With two Is
Caarolyyn: I'm going to start spelling my name with two As and two Ys
John: Miike Snow is Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg from Stockholm and that's from 2010's album Happy To You
