18 March 2014

Back once again, this week with a slightly Scandinavian feel. Let's crack on.

The Fall - The War Against Intelligence
The first Fall track I ever heard and been a fan ever since. From the 1991 album 'Shift-Work'.

Liars - Mess On A Mission
Love this so much. So much going on there. From the new album 'Mess' which is out next Monday.

Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightnin'
Because why not. Chester Burnett was his name and this is off his debut album from back in 1959 called 'Moanin' In The Moonlight'. Lots of apostrophes...

Cover Version Corner
New Order/Flunk - Blue Monday
Flunk are from Oslo and that's off their 2002 album 'For Sleepyheads Only'. Before that, they don't need an introduction. So I won't give them one. The Flunk version is one of those that I heard in the pub and identified by the wonder of Shazam. Ain't modern technology wonderful?

Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite
Staying in Norway, Terje Olsen is from MjĂžndalen. He's released plenty of stuff, but his first long-player is due out in April. 'It's Album Time'. Great name.

Lust For Youth - Another Day
To Sweden now and Hannes Norvide's Lust For Youth. This is one of those I've had hanging around for ages and now finally got chance to play. It came out on the album 'Perfect View' last summer.

One Degree of Separation
Underworld - Dark And Long
Propellerheads - Take California
First, from 1994, a terrific track from Underworld, followed by one from four years later by Propellerheads. The link is in the album titles. 'dubnobasswithmyheadman' is the Underworld one - a brilliant piece of work, still - and the Propellerheads with 'decksanddrumsandrockandroll'.

Silkken Laumann - Giving You Up
Fast becoming one of my favourite contemporary bands, I've played quite a few tracks from the album 'Not Forever Enough'. Because it's great.

Boards Of Canada - Happy Cycling
If I want to relax, this is my go to record. It's just great the way it develops. It was a bonus track on 'Music Has The Right To Children' from 1998 and I will never tire of it.

No show next week - blame Middlesbrough for that - so back in a fortnight.
In the meantime, here's that on YouTube:

See you in two weeks

11 March 2014

Evening all.

Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane
One of my favourite records of all time. I've got a 10" on blue vinyl from my coloured vinyl phase - which we have all had, I feel convinced - and it would definitely be in my top 50 tracks of forever. From the 1993 album 'Dirty'. The first of a few tracks from 1993 today, I notice. Not planned. Pure coincidence.

Fat White Family - Touch The Leather
Accompanied by one of the more out-there videos I've ever seen, what a glorious slice of retro-sleaze.

Jim Jones Revue - Seven Times Around The Sun
Keeping the retro vibe going. This is from a couple of years back, off the album 'The Savage Heart'.

Cover Version Corner
Stereolab/Editors - French Disko
The Editors track was a bonus track from their 2006 album 'The Back Room'. Before that, off the 1993 EP 'Jenny Ondiline' was Stereolab. Insert comment about making it your own here.

King Of The Mountains - Zoetrope
That, I suggest to you, is quite fabulous. The album is also called 'Zoetrope' and it came out last month. Excellent stuff. More please.

Tom Williams and The Boat - Hurricane
Finally, the town of Tunbridge Wells is on the musical map of the nation. Well, I can't think of any other band from there. The album is 'Easy Fantastic'.

High Hazels - Summer Rain
New from this very Sheffield band off the EP 'In The Half-Light'. Lovely summery vibe to go with the two hours of sun we had yesterday.

Pixies - Greens And Blues
Latest single from EP2. EP3 is out in August.

One Degree of Separation
Crispy Ambulance - Not What I Expected
Half Man Half Biscuit - Running Order Squabble Fest
HMHB there, going on after Crispy Ambulance. That's off 'This Leaden Pall' from, you guessed it, 1993. Before that, Crispy Ambulance, a b-side off the Unsightly And Serene single.

Spectres - Sooky Eyeball
Reminding me a lot of Hookworms, who I like very much, these are from Bristol and this is another b-side, to The Sky Of All Places.

Mutineers - Love, It's A Killer
This is out on the album 'Friends, Lovers, Rivals' released next Monday. Get on it.

The Last Battle - Breathe Bones
Delightful. We're already trailing things out in May - 'Lay Your Burden Down' is out on the 5th.

Electronic - Get The Message
From 1991 and the album 'Electronic', this is another all-time favourite. It's just great.

The Smiths - Barbarism Begins At Home
One of rock's great intros, we'll close with this. Off 1985's 'Meat Is Murder', I actually flipped a coin between this and The Headmaster Ritual. Another time...

4 March 2014

A bit of time off does you a power of good, eh? It's meant I've missed hakf a week's worth of new releases, but still plenty to go at for this week's show.

Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles
No reason behind playing this, other than it's ace.Which is kind of the point of this. That's off the 1980 album 'Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables'.

Neneh Cherry feat Robyn - Out Of The Black
Another track off the 'Blank Project' album, this time with Robyn on vocals as well. It makes you wonder what happened in the intervening 16 years or however long it's been. It's a cracking album. Get on it.

Ross Taylor - May The Road Rise
Local lad and Fat Stanley singer does solo stuff. I'd tell him it had a Tom Waits feel to it if I didn't think it'dgo to his head. And I'm delighted to say that Ross wll be coming in to do a live session for us in the not-too-distant future - a new departure for the show.

Cover Version Corner
Webb Pierce/CTMF - There Stands The Glass
CTMF - Chatham Forts, that is - with Wild Billy Chyldish on vocals for their version of the old Webb Pierce classic which came out last year on the album '36 Years Later'. The original before that from 1953. And why not.

Scott Walker- The Old Man's Back Again (Dedicated To The Neo-Staliist Regime)
One of the great basslines in rock, one of the best subtitles in parentheses in rock. From his fifth album, which everyone knows was 'Scott 4' in 1969.

Magic Arm - Put Your Collar Up
One I've been meaning to play for ages. Magic Arm is Mancunian Marc Rigelsford and this came out last June on the album 'Images Rolling'.

Deerhunter - Back To The Middle
A track from last year's long-player 'Monomania' which I've ad a couple from in the meantime. No reason not to play some more though, just to remind you that it was really good.

Silkken Laumann - House Of Common Problems
Vying for the ttle of my favourite act of the moment, these are from Ottawa in Canada. The album is 'Not Forever Enough'; I've heard it through a number of times now and flippin' love it.

One Degree of Separation
The Lovely Eggs - Food
Bird To Beast - Elephant
That Bird To Beast track, from the EP 'To Lips From Lungs' which came out last month, is getting a fair bit of radio play. I still can't decide if I like it or hat my defences have just been broken down. Before that, The Lovely Eggs from 2012's 'Wildlife' album. Double link klaxon! They're both Lancastrian and both are husband and wife duos.

Cornershop - Sleep On The Left Side
They are so much more than Brimful Of Asha. This is off the same album, as it goes - 'When I Was Born For The Seventh Time' - from 1997.

Kele feat Lucy Taylor - What Did I Do?
Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke's solo proect from a couple of years back. This is off the EP 'The Hunter'

Toy - Motoring
Did I mention I went away? Wel I did, to Newcastle, to see a couple of mates and to see Toy at The Cluny. And they were fantastc. Loud and fantastic. So here's a track from their first album for your delectation.

Jim James - State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U)
Another one from a while back that I've not got round to, but worth the wait, I think. It came out just over a year ago on the album 'Regions Of Light And Sound Of God'. Just a stunning track.

Factory Floor - How You Say (Daniel Avery remix)
And we continue to take it down tempo to feed into the following programme with thisbrand spanking new remix of the best track off the Factory Floor album. I like Factory Floor, I like Daniel Avery. So of course this wrks beautifully.
